Pan Dulce

I am bit sad that summer is over. I had a great time vacationing in Puerto Vallarta with my family last week. Everyday was pretty much pool day with cocktails on hand. We explored the city and tried out restaurants in the sleepy town of Bucerias, walked around downtown Puerto Vallarta, sailed away in a Pirate Ship Fun Tour, and braved the jungles in what they called a Tropical Adventure Tour. It was very relaxing, albeit the humid weather and the constant babysitting of my three super adorable nephews. I said the latter part of that last sentence very lovingly. I’m not joking. I love those boys.

Aside from greedily savoring Arrachera (marinated flank steak) and Huachinango (fried whole red snapper) for dinner, I was stuffing my mouth with different kinds of pan dulce (or sweet bread) while down in Mexico. I was so stoked to see local markets lined with trays and trays of pan dulce. Sugary, shiny, and crumbly. They were so delicious. I convinced myself that I will not worry one bit about my sugar-butter-flour intake with all the pan dulce I was snacking on. Heck, that’s what vacations are for, right? Gain five pounds with all the napping and eating and drinking.

Here are a few snapshots of the pan dulce we devoured before hitting the sack each night (with a tall glass of cold 2% milk… fat-free milk not widely available in Mexico). I promised myself that I will attempt to make pan dulce, specifically conchas (the very first pan dulce photo way above that looks like a shell), sometime soon. I know I will make my mother-in-law and my grandmother-in-law proud if I somehow manage to bake conchas that are minutely acceptable to their sophisticated pan dulce taste buds. Hope everyone had a great summer!

Great to hear you had a fabulous time! I haven’t been to Puerto Vallarta but have been o Cancun. Those pan dulce look incredible. And you’re right… no need to worry about the calories when you’re on vacation. That’s what vacations are for! Glad to know you splurged! šŸ™‚ Welcome back!

Thanks Jun! I ate my heart out. Literally. And I have zero regrets. Puerto Vallarta is more jungly and more bustling than Cancun. More citified in my opinion. I love Cancunā€¦ especially the sand and the crystal clear, blue ocean water. I wish I can go on another vacation soon. I was spoiledā€¦ I can do nothing all day if I choose to. Ha!

What a wonderful collection of vacation treats. What I love about vacationing is being able to eat, eat eat! I love going to Mexico with my family…it is such a relaxing place (good food, good drinks and long walks on the beach just can’t be beat!) Thanks for sharing.

Conchas have a special place in my heart. My abuelito (grandfather) used to bring them over warm from the bakeries in Mexico on Sunday mornings. Sounds like you had a R&R, memorable vacation. Beautiful images of good breads and pastries from Mexico! šŸ™‚

Wow, that’s a beautiful memory of yours with your abuelito, Cristina. I got to unwind and that was the biggest item on the agenda. Haha! Thanks!

Sounded like a wonderful trip! I’m too sad that summer will be over soon. Not that we get much sun here in Seattle…

Anyway, look at those treat porn! Drink by the pool and great treat at night -heaven!

I’m so glad you took so many pictures of the pan dulce! I LOVE vacation food pictures because they let me eat and travel vicariously. I think that chocolate filled tart would probably be my favorite. Glad you had a fabulous time šŸ™‚

Sounds a like a fabulous time in Mexico, especially spent with your family. Those breads and sweets look amazing, already missing indulging them myself from my recent trip. Can’t wait to see your pan dulce, or have you made it already? So behind on everyone’s posts! Using jet lag to catch up. šŸ™‚
